There's a lot we already know about Logitech's Revue with Google TV, and after our walkthrough on Saturday's Engadget Show, we also know just how NSFW the search results can be. All jesting aside, we did notice some amount of stuttering during our testing, and now we know why: for all intents and purposes, it's a netbook. The knife wielding gurus over at iFixit tore into the Revue in order to see what kind of internals were powering it, and sure enough, a 1.2GHz Atom CPU was at the core. That's marginally faster than the 1GHz A4 housed in the newest Apple TV, but there's a lot more to process here than on Cupertino's darling. There's also 1GB of DDR3 memory as well as a grand total of 5GB NAND Flash (split between a Samsung and Hynix chip). Essentially, the hardware here is on par with netbooks from fall 2008 (the Dell Mini 9 is accurately mentioned), with "tons of open space" allowing the box to stay cool under pressure. So, you down with paying $300 for hardware you could've scored two years ago, or are you just now realizing that a basic HTPC isn't that hard to setup.

I installed Zune for the first time today (wow, it's pretty!) -- but that's not the news! Here's the news: you can now grab a 12-month subscription to Zune for the price of 10 months. It's $150 for the year (a saving of $30!) or £90 if you're from the motherland. Spotify is currently £9.99 per month, with no 12-month option.

This lower price point, when accompanied with the continued roll-out across Europe, means that Zune may soon rule supreme on both sides of the Atlantic. Don't forget that you can download 10 free songs per month with Zune, too! And there's certainly no denying that the Zune desktop app is both more attractive and feature-rich than Spotify's.

I don't know which service currently has more subscribers, nor do I know the specifics on which service has the most tracks available in a given territory -- they both tout 'over 10 million', but I'm sure it varies from country to country. It certainly would be nice if this is the beginning of a price war, though. $15 per month is certainly a good deal, but $10 would be an even better deal.

Zune annual subscriptions now available, cheaper than Spotify originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 21 Oct 2010 13:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Move over, Flash and PDF -- there's a new contender in the race for the "browser plug-in exploit" title belt! According to the numbers Microsoft has crunched, Java appears to have locked up 2010's number one spot.

You don't often see Java's name splashed across the headlines, however, which is why the Microsoft report shocked me a bit. From personal experience on my workbench, I also know that Java is one of the last things the average user bothers to update. Outdated software is a big risk, especially when that software is being exploited as actively as Java is. Just last week, for example, Oracle pushed a massive bundle of 29 patches -- which I'll wager have been ignored by the vast Java-using public. My guess is that the bad guys have figured this out, too.

The good news: unlike Flash, which is needed by most of your favorite video and casual gaming sites, the Java plug-in is required far less often -- so you probably won't notice a big difference if you disable or uninstall it.

So you just hunkered down to read a glorious thousand-word epic about why the Web loves cats -- only to find yourself staring at hundreds of comments which ruined your reading experience with their harshness. If only you'd had some sort of filter for your browser which could hide those sections so you could read in peace!

There's shutup.css, which automatically blocks comments on every site it supports -- but for Chrome users, Comment Blocker is a much more flexible option. It not only blocks comment sections on most sites, but it also allows you to whitelist or blacklist URLs -- either individually, using the black and white buttons above, or by creating filter patterns in the Comment Blocker options.

And that's not where the configuration ends -- not by a long shot! You can set up a personalized hotkey to activate and deactivate the blocker, hide, collapse, or replace comments with a predefined phrase like "Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!"

Comment Blocker also automatically remembers which sites you've blocked during the current session and keeps them blocked until you restart your browser.

Really, Comment Blocker is a lot like AdBlock for comments, and it's every bit as effective and flexible. It's a must-have Chrome extension for users who enjoy Web-based reading with minimal interference.

Attention all humans and empathetic robots: The Engadget Show is back in a big way today, October 23rd at 6:30pm! To get things started, Josh and the gang will be taking a first-hand look at a plethora of Windows Phone 7 devices with Microsoft's Aaron Woodman, then we'll be demoing Google TV, and Engadget's own Darren Murph will be joining Josh, Nilay, and Paul on stage, Guinness World Record in hand. What's more, we're hosting our first ever Halloween costume contest! There will be giveaways at the show for the best costumes (as voted on by you, the audience), so get to work on your winning masterpiece now! We'll also have the usual random giveaways, but why leave it to chance when you could win stuff with a little creativity and a black turtleneck? There will also be music from Kris Keyser and visuals from noteNdo and plenty of other giveaways at the live show only, so make the trek and join us at The Times Center in person. We have a new ticketing policy, so if you're coming to the live show, be sure to read about it below. If you're geographically incapable of joining us in New York City laster this evening just tune into the stream right here on Engadget.

Update: Due to a technical issue, we won't be livestreaming the show tonight.

Update 2: Or maybe we will! We appear to have worked out some of the issues, so head on down!

The Engadget Show is sponsored by Sprint, and will take place at the Times Center, part of The New York Times Building in the heart of New York City at 41st St. between 7th and 8th Avenues (see map after the break). Tickets are -- as always -- free to anyone who would like to attend, but seating is limited, and tickets will be first come, first served... so get there early! Here's the updated info on our new ticketing policy that you need to know:
  • There is no admission fee -- tickets are completely free
  • The event is all ages
  • Ticketing will begin at the Times Center at 2:00PM today, Saturday October 23rd, doors will open for seating at 5:45PM, and the show begins at 6:30PM
  • We now have assigned seating, so the first people to get their tickets -- and the Sprint text-to-win winners (see below) -- will get priority seating. This also means that once you get a ticket, your seat is guaranteed -- you won't have to get back in line to get a good seat.
  • We still had plenty of tickets left over at the last taping, so just because it's 5:00pm and you finally finished Halo: Reach doesn't mean you won't get a seat at the show -- so get your butt up to the Times Center this evening!
  • Ticketing will continue until all tickets are given away
  • You cannot collect tickets for friends or family -- anyone who would like to come must be present to get a ticket
  • Seating capacity in the Times Center is about 340, and once we're full, we're full
  • The venue is located at 41st St. between 7th and 8th Avenues in New York City (map after the break)
  • The show length is around an hour
If you're a member of the media who wishes to attend, please contact us at: engadgetshowmedia [at] engadget [dot] com, and we'll try to accommodate you. All other non-media questions can be sent to: engadgetshow [at] engadget [dot] com.

When I hear "smash the castle" and "physics game," the first thing that comes to mind is another one of those trebuchet-launching, Angry Birds-style games where you shoot a projectile from the side of the screen onto an unseen target, trying to hit it with the correct angle and velocity in order to wreak just the right sort of havoc.

This is why I was in for a surprise with Sieger. It was also billed as a "smash the castle" game, but I was surprised to discover that it's a "first-person smash the castle." You shoot the castle from the front, which is much, much more fun!

It's closer to a puzzle than a physics game, actually. The shots are incredibly accurate; you never miss - you just pinpoint whichever point on the castle you wish to hit, click, and boom!

That, in itself, is very satisfying. But then the question becomes, "where exactly should I hit to inflict the most damage?" And that's a fun question to answer, indeed!

Progress is rapid; I moved through the first 10-15 levels very quickly, with each level taking just one try. Around level five, you get a new projectile (called "diseased head," I believe) which is toxic and kills surrounding personnel. There are also hostages, which you must not kill. It's definitely a fun little game! Now, where's the Android version?

Sieger is a fun, original smash-the-castle game -- Time-Waster originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 13 Oct 2010 13:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Nook users can already lend ebooks they've purchased to others, and it looks like Kindle users will soon be able to do the same. Amazon has just announced that it will be offering a similar feature "later this year" that will let folks lend books they've purchased to other Kindle users for a 14-day period, during which the person that actually purchased the book won't be able to read it themselves. That feature won't be available for all ebooks, however, as it will be up to individual publishers and rights holders to enable it for a particular book. What's more, Amazon has also announced that Kindle newspapers and magazines will soon be readable on the various free Kindle apps available for other devices -- look for that feature to launch in the "coming weeks."

By subscriber count, Verizon had vaulted into first place by a pretty comfortable margin following its Alltel acquisition, but AT&T added significantly more customers this last quarter than Big Red did -- and just like that, the battle for first place among the US national carriers is starting to get hot again. Verizon added 997,000 customers (excluding acquisitions) in the July through September period versus AT&T's beefy 2.6 million, meaning AT&T now stands at some 92.8 million -- just 400,000 or so fewer that Verizon's headcount. Nothing like an exclusive iPhone launch to give you a little boost, right? On the plus side, Verizon's postpaid churn in the quarter was low at 1.07 percent, and Verizon Communications as a whole earned 31 cents per share -- lower than its second quarter pre-adjustment EPS of 58 cents, but a heck of a lot higher than the 7 cent loss it actually posted in Q2.

Outside of wireless, the company added 226,000 and 204,000 FiOS internet and television customers, respectively, bringing the totals to 3.9 and 3.3 million; FiOS ARPU is up nearly 11 percent year over year, and the company claims that its FiOS business now represents about half of its consumer revenues -- pretty impressive. Follow the break for Verizon's full press release.

Household robots could become a reality sooner than we think. But the first hurdle is that they would have to make great pancakes -- after all the breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

Willow Garage, a Palo Alto, California-based robotic company hopes its robots can pass that test. The company showed a demo where two robots, James and Rosie, worked together to make pancakes from a mix and even flipped it right.

Google made it pretty clear that Chrome's new, faster release schedule was going to lead to a rather steep incline on the version number chart, but I'm starting to side with the sticklers here. Last night, Chromium hit version 9.

If you weren't keeping tabs, Chromium 8 was only released two weeks ago. Yep, two weeks. There have been a couple small visual tweaks that you'll notice right off the hop, the first being a promo panel for the Omnibox (image after the break). Also now on board: password sync support, which is enabled by default.

I'm curious, Download Squad readers. Does the version number in Chrome still mean anything to you at this point? To me, it really doesn't. There are five versions: Stable, Beta, Dev, Canary, and Chromium. Wherever they are in their evolution, that's what matters to me.

As always, you can download the latest Chromium build for your OS here.

Earlier this month, I had the great pleasure of spending some time at the Stream unconference in Athens, Greece with the legendary Israeli entrepreneur and investor Yossi Vardi. As the original investor in ICQ, Israel?s best known technology investor and a global networker par excellence , you?d think that Vardi would have regaled me with tales of his investment prowess. But no. Instead of stories about his ability to see the future before anyone else, he insisted that his only talent was the ability to ?write checks very fast.? That?s Yossi. Whereas most investors are a lot less intelligent than they appear, so Vardi is much smarter than he seems. Behind all the self-deprecating jokes about his wife, his robust physique and his sartorial inelegance (he was just voted one of the five worst dressed people in Israel, a badge he wears ? to excuse the pun - with great honor), Vardi is one of the very few wise men of tech. And that wisdom is derived from his refusal to take himself or his manifold achievements too seriously. Video ahead.

There's precisely zero doubt that AT&T will be supporting LTE waves in the not-too-distant future, but it looks as if "the future" may be drawing closer than anyone had ever imagined. Or else the carrier's just really, really proactive. Based on the leaked slide above, it looks as if AT&T is already beginning to transition its current crop of SIM cards to "those that will also support LTE devices." Naturally, the iPhone 4 is omitted from all of this due to it using a micro SIM, but it looks as if employees will need to keep a careful eye on the SKU (and front graphics) in order to make sure customers are well equipped for another blend of 4G. Now, how's about a rollout schedule, Ma Bell?

There are plenty of people who just assumed Adobe and HTML5 would mix like oil and water -- thanks to the whole Flash Player thing. In truth, however, Adobe has been delivering Web development tools like Dreamweaver for quite some time -- so it stands to reason that they'd offer HTML5 goodies at some point.

Illustrator and Dreamweaver already received add-ons which bring HTML5 kung fu, and now Adobe has announced a widget which will cause some to think that they've lost their marbles.

It's a hybrid HTML5/Flash video widget. Says Adobe, "the limited browser support for the HTML5 <video> tag has forced web designers to scramble for a solution that would work across platforms as well as browsers." The new player switches seamlessly from HTML5 to Flash if the <video> tag isn't supported and works on any compatible browser -- desktop, mobile, TV, refrigerator -- you get the idea.

The release isn't really a surprise. After all, Adobe is a founding member of the Open Screen Project. To be truly "open screen," that means extending the olive branch to devices which don't run Adobe Flash in order to preserve a code-once-display-everywhere experience.
